This story is so sad. of course this is a human story, it both tough and beautiful. it's great writing and research.

But why are there no stories of success that come out of this region (Xinjiang). Why can't a beautiful smart educated and successful Han woman marry a Uyghur Man. You know - there are people from Xinjiang who are incredibly elite, incredibly smart, educated, proud, beautiful. these are the people we should be writing about. what are their voices? We never "see" this elite. they are voiceless. it's devastating, because these people have no local voice in China. the fact that they are muslim is just too risky. it makes people shy away from telling their stories.

this story is beautiful. in that it is an honest depiction of the hardness of a life of poverty. of living so disconnected, of drug-use, of love. it's a great piece of journalism.
